Autumn Festival Brings the Community Closer

20170929 autumnfestival

“3! 2! 1! !” Boom! Boom! Boom! The sound of drums clashing with loud guitars signaled the lighting of the bonfire, which was perfectly timed with the night falling upon the crowd. In a way, it also signified the beginning of the harvest season.

On September 23, the fourth BCIS Autumn Festival took place on the football field. Over 3,000 attendees came to take part in the many fun-filled activities and commemorate this important occasion in the traditional Chinese culture. More importantly, it was a gathering held in celebration of the school’s Chinese roots that truly showed what a unique, diverse, and strong community BCIS is. In fact, it was the participation and efforts of everyone involved that made the event such a great spectacle. This includes the exciting lineup of live performances by students, our friendly neighbors from Golden Heights, as well as professional performers specially invited to keep everyone’s spirits up (the nonstop flashing lights of cameras can attest to this); the numerous food vendors that helped keep people’s bellies’ full and satisfied with an array of delicious foods to choose from, including hotdogs, Kung Pao chicken, sweet treats, and popcorn; and of course, the wonderful people that prepared and ran interesting booths to keep participants’ minds occupied, including the paint-a-fan and calligraphy areas hosted by traditional Chinese artisans, as well as the large ocean ball pool and outdoor theater that certainly put big smiles on the children’s faces.

It is also essential to place a spotlight on the BCIS staff, ranging from music teachers and students to administrative department members, that worked tirelessly to make a memorable experience from scratch for all. Behind the scenes were long days spent planning and executing the perfect set up for the perfect day. Even on the day itself, there was no rest for these people since there was a continuous flow of nonstop work. The event’s success can therefore be greatly attributed to their dedication and hard work.

Lastly, it must be said that the BCIS community is truly generous and wonderful. The kindness shown by the students and sponsors can not be overstated. Many of our young learners raised money for the Help a Child Smile charitable organization, which provides surgeries for children with cleft lifts or palates. Numerous sponsors also donated a portion of their earnings that evening to the charity, displaying a true sense of service and selflessness, which follows the BCIS mission of being compassionate and inspired people that act for the good of all and for the sustainable development of the world.

Overall, the fourth Autumn Festival brought the already tight-knit BCIS community closer by providing an unforgettable experience for all those that attended. As an event that provided both brightness and warmth in the dark, we hope everyone that felt and witnessed this magical spectacle was left in awe.

Happy Mid-Autumn Festival!
