Music at BCIS

We warmly welcome and invite all BCIS students to join and take part in the

many concerts and performances in the Secondary School Music Program this

year.Music offers dynamic opportunities for solo and ensemble performances

throughout the year. We invite all new and returning students to consider

participating in the BCIS Music program.


The BCIS Secondary Music Program consists of:

MYP and DP Music classes

-  In Semester 1, students in Grades 6-9 will study MYP Music. In Semester 2, students will have elective choices to further develop their skills in Music. This includes studies in composition, performance, and collaborative work within the Arts Department to create a performance.

-  Grade 10 Music is an elective Arts subject for students looking to take their musical studies further through composition, theory, history, and performance. 

-  IB Diploma Programme Music is offered to students in Grades 11 and 12 at both Standard Level (SL) and Higher Level (HL).

-  In class, students also study to be part of an ensemble.


Ensemble Program

-  We have a range of ensembles to join after school with performances at the Winter Concert, recitals, a musical, and other events: BCIS Orchestra, Jazz Ensemble, Ensembles at Grades 10, 11, and 12, and the Secondary School Choir.

-  For our first BCIS Musical, this year we will be performing Return to the Forbidden Planet. This is a musical based on Shakespeare’s The Tempest, combined with the 1960s B-Movie Forbidden Planet. It features fantastic rock n’ roll hits from the 50s & 60s. It will be an incredible and fun opportunity for students to work collaboratively and across the Arts disciplines.

-  Ensemble is open to all new and returning students who already play an instrument or who would like to sing. Join us in one or more of these groups this year.

Instrumental Music Program with Wisemann Music

The Instrumental Music Program is a really fun and exciting way to learn a musical instrument. The students have both group instrumental lesson for basic training and band rehearsal for playing together as an ensemble. The students can choose from brass, wood wind and percussion instruments. We will offer the students a variety of performance opportunities each semester.

Who is it for?

The Instrumental Music Program is for the students in Grade 6-12. Whether you are a beginner or continuing on from last year or have had instrumental lessons before and want to play as part of an ensemble. We welcome students of all abilities. 

Teaching Team:

Our team consists of a group of well experienced expert teachers, including woodwind group teacher, brasswind group teacher and percussion group teacher etc. They are highly regarded professional musicians and players in China and abroad and active at all kinds of concerts. Mr. Leo Xu is the current EA band director, both the brass instrumental group teacher and conductor as well as our Education Consultant of Wisemann band program.

When: Wednesdays 15:00-16:15
; Where: Room 2416

How much does it cost?

The fee per student each school year (two Semesters) is RMB 5,200. Fees can be paid during EA Band Promotion Events and no later than September 15 at the first lesson. 



All students require an instruments, either purchased independently or direct from Wisemann Academy of Music who are able to offer at a most favorable price. For instrument purchase through Wisemann please email Mrs. Grace Li (gracelee@dymusic.com.cn) and refer to attached price list for Wisemann instruments. Instruments bought from Wisemann will have 2years warranty.
