PAL Workshop: A Focused Journey to the Deep

We would like to announce that on October 26, BCIS will hold a Parents as Learners (PAL) Workshop titled, “A Focused Journey to the Deep.” The engaging session will be led by Early Childhood Center Learning Support Teacher Dr. Reed Rhodes, who holds a Ph.D. and two M.A. Ed Degrees in Special Education. Please read further for more exciting details.

By choosing what to focus our attention on and what to ignore, we can improve the quality of our lives. Unfortunately, many of us do not realize that the focusing capacity of our attention is limited. As a result, by allowing network tools to distract us, our ability to focus our attention on things that really matter, like deep work, will be impaired. According to Cal Newport, author of Deep Work, being able to work deeply is a valuable and rare skill that gives meaning to our lives, but it requires a state of distraction-free attention. To help us, Dr. Newport provides four rules that serve as a blueprint to develop our ability to work deeply and to resist distractions.

This engaging workshop was prepared and designed using principles from Garr Reynolds’ brilliant book Presentation Zen, so get ready for a totally new experience. Dr. Rhodes will explain how he spent his summer holiday in Cambodia conducting a deep work experiment to create three innovative workshops, and yet he still enjoyed pleasurable holiday adventures with his family. During the introduction for the workshop, he will share his personal experiences and photos (in Pecha Kucha format) of his experiment. Come and learn about deep work and how it can help you and your children in your daily lives. You just might find, as Dr. Rhodes did, that life’s best moments occur when we work deeply and feel awake, focused, and rapt.

The event is open to all and free to attend. Please simply scan the QR code on the picture to register. We look forward to seeing you on the day.
