Earth Hour 2010 – Join BCIS, Dim your lights!

Join BCIS this Saturday 27 March from 20:30 to 21:30 as we dim the lights on campus to show our commitment to combating climate change.  Families may join in this World Wildlife Fund (WWF) initiated global campaign by simply turning off all non-essential lighting this Saturday between 20:30 and 21:30. Together, we can make it better!

Why do we have Middle School Spirit Week?

As the winter months drag on, the weather is cold and miserable, the mornings and afternoons are dark and dingy, and student energy levels are quite low. However, Middle School Spirit Week turns this around and is a really fun time to be in and around Middle School. Last week there was a buzz of excitement and a level of energy to lift us out of the winter months. Spirit Week helps us to recharge, re-energize and refocus for the remaining few months of the school year. Spirit Week is undoubtedly a lot of fun, but there is so more to Spirit Week than simply having fun.

Haiti Appeal

Over the last few weeks, the BCIS community raised a total of over 42,000 RMB for the Haiti relief effort. We will donate this to a microfinance organisation in Haiti called Fonkoze (www.fonkoze.org). Fonkoze (a contraction of the Haitian Creole phrase “Fondasyon Kole Zepòl” meaning “Shoulder-to-Shoulder Foundation”) is essentially a bank for the poor, and will disburse these funds not as charitable donations, but as easy loans to lift Haitians out of poverty whilst contributing to the growth of the economy of the country.

From the Children of Madaifu and the Christmas Apples

BCIS joined a charity drive called “the Christmas Apples” organized by the Children of Madaifu at the end of 2009. A total of 79,941RMB was raised by the sales of all apples in Beijing. BCIS sold lots in Elementary School, Middle School and High School. A small primary school in Nanshan (Gansu) had a new heating system installed and classrooms are now heated to 20 degrees. Additionally, there is no coal smoke in the classes now so students are better able to concentrate on their lessons. The remainder of the money was used to buy new books for their library. Thank you once again for your kindness towards your community.
