BCIS in Focus

BCIS In Focus - June 3, 2015

Dear Parents,

Summer is a great time to spend time with your children. There is research that states that, on average, children move one month backwards in their learning over the summer. I always suggest reading to your children or having them read as much as they can over the summer. The worst thing you can do for your child is to keep her or him in your apartment for long periods doing nothing except watching television and playing computer games.

BCIS In Focus - May 20, 2015

Dear Parents,

Every year, we collect all kinds of information from many different constituencies within the BCIS community. We survey parents, teachers, staff, and finally students. The survey I particularly like to read each year is the Grade 12 survey. We have done this for a couple of years, so we are now able to start looking at the answers over time to see what kind of trends are appearing. This year I have surveys from just about half of the class. Forty percent of the respondents joined BCIS three years ago, a third of the group joined us in Grade 6, and none of the group were here in Elementary School.

BCIS In Focus - May 6, 2015

Dear Parents,

It is that time of year again when we celebrate the achievements of our students across many grade levels. These accomplishments include very recent things, and others that they have been working on for a long time. It started with the Secondary School student body and faculty wishing Grade 12 the best on their upcoming IB exams, as the seniors finished their last day of classes on Friday, April 24.

BCIS In Focus - April 15, 2015

Dear Parents,

In my last In Focus on April 1, I talked about using the time during the break to ask your children to take time to reflect on their learning since August, and to use that reflection to set some goals for themselves for the next nine weeks of school. We have spent time this year moving the Strategic Planning process forward at BCIS, and I have written about the experience of that in previous In Focus articles.

BCIS In Focus - April 1, 2015

Dear Parents,

At BCIS we are constantly looking at ways for our students to really connect with and understand the IB Learner Profile. When I read the Principals’ letters, hear teachers talk about the attributes in that profile, read student essays and review surveys form our seniors, I see how the students have internalized the Learner Profile and made it part of them.
