BCIS In Focus - March 18, 2015

Dear Parents,

As a parent myself, I think it is really great that parents have many ways to keep up with both what their children are learning at school, and the progress they are making throughout the year. How do I know that my daughter is learning at school? I take part in parent-teacher conferences, student-led conferences, and I talk with her at home regularly about her school life, as I have done for all four of my children over the past 20 years. Today, Wednesday, March 18, I will take part in student-led conferences for the last time, just a few hours before you get this letter. The last of my four children is graduating from high school. I have experienced parent-teacher conferences, digital systems like ManageBac, Blackboard, grade reports, written comments, portfolios of my children’s work, etc. and I always find myself asking the same questions - Are my children being challenged? Are they keeping up with developmental milestones? Will they be able to compete with others? Are they becoming more confident, empowered and inspired learners?

Dear Parents,

Welcome back to school. I hope that you and your family had a relaxing and restful break. I enjoyed visiting Angkor Wat in Cambodia, and found that it was a very special place to learn about the history of Southeast Asia, Hinduism and Buddhism.

BCIS In Focus - February 11, 2015

Dear Parents,

After returning from the winter break, the atmosphere around school has been stellar. You can feel the intensity of engagement between the students in each grade level and the work they are doing. The Chinese New Year break is fast approaching, but thankfully we have had a decent amount of time between breaks where we have managed to accomplish a lot. Last week, the Secondary School opened a new art exhibition, which I hope you will take the time to visit, and appreciate what our young artists are creating. I was lucky enough to also catch the High School drama productions this past weekend. The students gave strong and thought-provoking performances. This week at the ECC, we are getting ready for the Open Day on February 12, where there is more wonderful artwork to see.

Dear Parents,

At the PTA meeting on Wednesday morning, I asked how many parents were planning to go the Middle School Music Recital on Wednesday night, or the Senior Music Recital on Thursday night. There were a couple of people who raised their hands. I was fortunate enough to attend both recitals and I was very impressed with the level of talent, the amount of effort each student put into their performance, and the professional way in which the Music Department at BCIS produced the event.

BCIS In Focus - January 14, 2015

Dear Community Members,

When I graduated from Hamilton College in 1972 with a degree in Asian studies, I set a life goal for myself to make sure I spent time in China at some point in my life. It took quite a long time for me to fulfill this goal, but in December 2011, when I accepted the job as Principal of the Secondary School at BCIS, I finally had achieved my dream. I cannot explain to you how much it meant to me to move to China with my wife and my daughter and to have the opportunity to be involved in leading BCIS through a transition to a new point in its history. I have treasured the opportunity to live and work in China.
