As we enter the 2024-2025 academic year, Beijing City International School (BCIS) proudly celebrates its 20th anniversary. These 20 years have been characterized by our leadership in the world of international education in China — BCIS offers the International Baccalaureate curriculum spanning from Early Years through high school, including the Primary Years Programme (PYP), Middle Years Programme (MYP), Diploma Programme (DP), as well as our bespoke IDEATE high school course. Driven by our mission, BCIS is committed to delivering high-quality learning and teaching to our community.

Our school is home to a highly qualified teaching staff of 240 professionals from 26 countries and regions, including the United States, Canada, Australia, and the United Kingdom. All of our teachers hold relevant educational degrees and certifications from their respective home countries. The ratio of international to local teachers is approximately 3:7, with over 70% of our staff having more than ten years of experience and over 50% holding master's degrees or higher.

At the BCIS kindergartens (BCIS Early Childhood Center and BCIS Courtyard Kindergarten), we use investigative play-based approaches as the foundation for learning. The faculty deliver a curriculum which nurtures the strong, meaningful development of our early years students in our state-of- the-art facilities.

The Elementary School (ES) curriculum nurtures curiosity and empowers students to have voice and choice in their learning. Combining the PYP and our school mission, our ES inquiry-based approach unlocks students’ potential and allows them to explore possibilities with a strong focus on fostering future-ready learners.

Our Secondary School (SS) learning model develops critical and creative thinkers, connected learners and purposeful doers. We achieve this by empowering students’ initiative, encouraging learning by doing, prioritizing social and emotional learning and reinforcing knowledge, concepts and context. This approach allows students to seek out their own personal learning pathways, meet personalized challenges and demonstrate success in a variety of ways. Through the impact-based approach to learning adopted in the MYP, DP and IDEATE, students are equipped with the competencies and capabilities needed to adapt, thrive and contribute in an ever-changing world.

Since 2009, BCIS has successfully guided over 550 graduates from 16 graduating classes to more than 240 prestigious institutions worldwide. Our alumni have attended some of the world's top universities, including Harvard University, Columbia University, Cornell University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Stanford University, University of Cambridge, University of Oxford, and Imperial College London. They have also been accepted into leading liberal arts colleges such as Williams College, Wellesley College, Grinnell College, Bowdoin College, Wesleyan University, and Pomona College. Additionally, many students have pursued their passions by enrolling in top specialized institutions like Pratt Institute, Rhode Island School of Design, Parsons School of Design in New York, and the Architectural Association School of Architecture in London.

Located in the heart of the CBD, BCIS students, families and staff form a vibrant community which experiences the real Beijing – both historical and modern. We learn together through regular parent and community events that promote knowledge-sharing and lifelong learning within and beyond our community.

At BCIS, our students excel not only academically but also in various other aspects. We offer a diverse range of enrichment activities, many of which are student-driven and led, demonstrating their ability to exercise student agency by utilizing community resources. These extracurricular activities complement classroom learning by fostering experiential learning, allowing students to explore their passions and actively contribute to sustainable development.

The school also provides extensive competition and contest opportunities, such as the American Mathematics Competitions, Australian Mathematics Competitions, and the annual AVENIR Business Competition. We frequently host Chinese debate competitions and facilitate student participation in the UKMT and Family Mathematics Olympiad and ACE ACAMIS Robotics Competition. In the world of athletics, BCIS is a member of the International Schools Athletics Conference (ISAC), the Association of Chinese and Mongolian International Schools (ACAMIS), and the Junior International Schools Athletics Conference (JISAC), participating in seasonal events throughout the year. Our student services include Learning Support, an often-revisited and re-emphasized Child Protection Policy, English as Additional Language Support, and Counseling services.

At BCIS, our community is solidly built by the collaborative efforts of all constituents - students, parents and staff. Our tight-knit community learns and journeys together, taking full advantage of the range of opportunities afforded by one another, sharing knowledge and creating space for mutual growth. BCIS parents are greatly encouraged by these initiatives and are a vital and active part of our community. We host numerous annual events for parents, including sharing sessions, diverse PTA activities, Parents-as-Learners Workshops, and large community events such as the Terry Fox Run, Spring in the City, and Christmas Bazaar. We encourage parents to become actively involved in the BCIS community, where a supportive and harmonious environment nurtures lifelong learning.

Our alumni network is a treasured asset, connecting past graduates and offering current students access to valuable resources and support. Alumni gatherings, open days, and our alumni portal keep the BCIS community vibrant and engaged. Beyond the classroom and in the realm of personal connections, our alumni network continues to strengthen and expand the warm, supportive fabric of the BCIS community. "Once a BCISer, Always a BCISer!"

As a continually evolving learning community, BCIS is dedicated to a future-focused education. We believe that this is not just about preparing students for what lies ahead but inspiring them to shape it. Our community is committed to offering extensive resources that encourage students to engage in personalized learning, explore their passions, apply their knowledge to real-world challenges, and make a meaningful impact on both their local community and the broader world.

In response to technological advancements, BCIS has created innovative spaces like the ‘APEX’, our robotics center. These facilities blend learning, showcasing, and competition, enhancing and extending our current technology education programs. We also host regular forums, such as the "Shaping Our Future" series and AI-focused educational workshops, to further expand students' perspectives.

In addition to cutting-edge facilities, the school offers a variety of scholarship programs, including academic, merit, and founder’s scholarships, to support individuality, creativity, and talent among our students. The APEX Innovators Scholarship  and the Future Leaders Scholarship are designed to inspire both current and prospective students to develop innovative thinking and entrepreneurial skills, aligning with BCIS’ future-focused educational values.

BCIS is dedicated to the enduring impact of education, viewing it as more than just a pathway to university. Our education serves as the foundation for students' academic journeys and supports their global aspirations, with many of the benefits of our education remaining evident throughout their lives. Many BCIS graduates continue their studies after completing their undergraduate degrees, with over 35% pursuing advanced degrees such as master's or doctoral programs. Our alumni have made their mark at leading global companies, including top financial institutions like Boston Consulting Group, KPMG, JPMorgan Chase, and Merrill Lynch, as well as tech giants such as Apple, CERN, and Meta. Others are working at prestigious law firms like Allen & Overy, White & Case and Fangda Partners, or running their own companies in cities like Beijing, Shanghai, California, and New York. These BCIS graduates are driven by the lifelong learning skills fostered by their time at BCIS.
