BCIS 2024 Spring in the City

Cecilia PEI

The eagerly anticipated Spring in the City: “One City, Four Springs” festival at BCIS took place last weekend to much excitement. This year’s fair featured over 70 booths and activity areas, each adorned in one of four colors: red, yellow, green, and blue. These colors symbolized different aspects of BCIS' values. Participants had the opportunity to collect stamps from each themed area, immersing themselves fully in the event. Join us as we explore the vibrant festivities, witnessing how thousands of attendees came together to create a colorful celebration of spring at BCIS!

At BCIS, red symbolizes not only the school's educational spirit but also the vitality and personalization encompassed in our community. Each year, Spring in the City immerses participants in the unique atmosphere of the BCIS community. This year's event featured a diverse array of cuisines, merchandise stalls, and activities. Attendees were treated to song and dance performances by the Elementary School and Early Childhood Center students, as well as band performances by the Secondary School. Interactive games zones, planned by BCIS teachers and students, added to the excitement, while the PTA parents' gift stalls dotted the venue, enhancing the sense of community.

Various institutions under the YueCheng group, including YueCheng Senior Living, YueCheng Courtyard Kindergarten, Learning Frontier, and Reading Frontier, all contributed their unique flavors to the event. Most notably, Reading Frontier's professional teachers hosted a parent workshop in the cafeteria, allowing parents to enjoy the springtime festivities while also learning practical techniques to enhance their children's focus in learning. This blend of activities and contributions truly captured the essence of the BCIS community.

In BCIS's spectrum of colors, yellow symbolizes not only the ginkgo tree and the foundation of Chinese culture but also hard work and creativity. Students showcased their gardening and handicraft creations while participating in traditional games and performances. A specially designated light and shadow space served as a platform for screening student-directed films.

This space featured the short film "Qi," directed by fifth-grade BCIS students, which received accolades at the China International Youth Short Film Festival and other international film festivals. Nina, a graduate of the class of 2024, captured the spring scenes of the BCIS community and illustrated how it integrates with the traditional and modern aspects of Beijing in her short film "Spring into BCIS." In another section, children freely expressed their creativity by painting with light and shadow in a darkened space. These activities showcased the students' exploration and creativity, offering a rich experience for them.

The verdant green of spring not only represents the literal colors of the season but also symbolizes BCIS' commitment to sustainability, care, and global citizenship. The annual event provided students with an excellent opportunity for community service activities. By selling handicrafts and artworks, students raised funds to support various causes.

In the vibrant tapestry of BCIS, the color blue represents the vision of technology and AI in education, preparing students for the future. With the unveiling of the APEX robotics center earlier this year, this vision has become more concrete, marking an important milestone in promoting this educational goal.

Spring in the City was open to both community members and the general public, inviting participants to experience the innovative atmosphere at BCIS. The light and shadow space featured ultra-high-definition projection technology provided by Epson, delivering an immersive audio-visual experience, with a Mars-based exploration game for children also adding a touch of adventure to the event.

The theme of four colors at BCIS created a diverse and engaging experience, with participants coming together to paint a unique picture of BCIS Spring through their involvement in the various activities. As the event came to a close, the wonderful experiences and memories lingered, promising to stay with us until the arrival of next spring. We look forward to the next year’s Spring in the City — see you there!
