BCIS 2024 Graduation Ceremony

Cecilia PEI

On the afternoon of May 25th, as the vibrant beats of the teacher-led Chinese drum ensemble echoed across the hall, graduates clad in their gowns confidently strode through the center aisle, their faces radiant with joy and their eyes gleaming with anticipation.

In his opening speech, Beijing City International School Head of School Mr. Tom Egerton introduced a key theme of this year’s ceremony— "Change: Balencing pressure with a positivee outlook" He emphasized viewing pressure as a sign that one is striving for excellence, and in light of it is still maintaining an optimistic outlook, believing in the power of keeping a positive mindset.

"Class of 2024, as you step out into the world, remember that life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you react to it. Embrace a positive attitude, and let it be the guiding force that propels you towards success, fulfillment, and a life well-lived. "

Ms. Natalie Harvey, Secondary School principal, also encouraged graduates to view change as a natural part of life, with pressure symbolizing growth and progress.

"Change is an inevitable part of life and it often comes pressure—the pressure to succeed, to make the right choices, and to live up to the expectations of others and yourselves. When you feel the weight of expectations bearing down on you, remember that it is often a sign that you are on the cusp of something great. Growth and progress are often natural consequences of venturing into uncharted territories and pushing yourselves beyond your comfort zones. Embrace this as a catalyst for personal and professional development, but do not let it consume you."

Reflecting on their journey, graduates Jeremy and Selina shared how they faced challenges with courage and optimism.Think back to the moments when you felt like giving up, when the road ahead seemed impossibly long and full of obstacles. But look at us now, standing here, heads held high, showing what determination and resilience really mean.

As graduates get ready to embark on new journeys, they have already achieved remarkable success in this process of preparation. During the 2024 application season, BCIS graduates received 198 acceptance letters from universities worldwide, with scholarships totaling approximately $1.3 million. Not only are these universities held in high regard, but more importantly they are the best-fit universities for each of our students, as they continue their studies in diverse fields such as economics, finance, medicine, psychology, and more.

Upon her turn to address the cohort, student-selected teacher speaker Ms. Olivia Chen urged them to maintain patience and confidence.

"Life is a marathon that’s even longer than we think. Your vision will only expand, so be patient. Be patient and confident in finding your true path."

Helen, the valedictorian of the Class of 2024, will attend Williams College, ranking first in the United States for liberal arts colleges, in September.

"Speaking of chapters, there are many in life, so let’s think ahead. We are all main characters in our own lives, led by desires, fears, hopes, disappointments, pride, and insecurities. We cannot erase our flaws, because they make us complex, interesting heroes, but we can revise them. I hope we all draft each chapter in life better than the last."

Right before the annual ‘passing of the torch’ tradition, graduates Cindy and Tommy emphasized the importance of being present.

"Living in the moment inspires our potential and leads us to discover hidden opportunities. Regrets are not only what we do poorly, but what we don’t do, so embrace every opportunity, and don't fear failure. Be happy and face life's challenges with a smile on your face."

As graduates passed on the torch of hope to the next generation, they continue to inspire others to march on forward bravely.

As the graduates of the Class of 2024 stepped back down onto the red carpet, it signified not only their journey into the next chapter of their lives but also their entrance into the BCIS Alumni Network, a reminder that once you are a BCISer, you are always a BCISer. With confidence and determination, the BCIS Class of 2024 are ready to embrace the future, whatever may come their way!
