Choosing the right international educational path for your preschool child to go down is an important and complex decision: how do you select the most suitable kindergarten and curriculum? When should your child start attending preschool? How does a kindergarten provide an environment and support to help children transition smoothly from home to school, while also easing parental separation anxiety?

Each child has their own personality, interests, and a best-fit educational philosophy to suit their growth. At the Beijing City International School Early Childhood Center (BCIS ECC), we understand that starting kindergarten is a significant transition for both children and their families. That's why BCIS ECC is dedicated to creating a warm and caring environment, with carefully designed transition programs to ease the separation anxiety of both parents and children, while also strengthening home-school communication and collaboration through community activities.

The preparations for a new school year at the kindergarten begin several months before the first day of school. Long before the children start, ECC teachers prepare a panda-themed ‘Kindergarten Guidebook’ that details the school's learning environment, classrooms, library, and other key areas. This book is sent to each family before school starts, allowing children and parents to become familiar with the new environment and daily activities through illustrations and age-appropriate text. This playful guide, complemented by the images throughout the campus, helps children ease into the new school year.

Additionally, in our outdoor roof garden, teachers have decorated the space age-appropriately, fostering a suitable learning environment. Principal Jackie explains that this green space helps children feel more relaxed about starting kindergarten, and that on the first day of school, children can choose to walk through this lush path, finding a moment of calm and joy as they adjust to the new environment. "In our preparations, we are always thinking about how to elevate the children's 'threshold' through these details," Jackie shares, highlighting the deliberate design elements that encourage children to gain both confidence and comfort in the upcoming experiences.

After the school year begins, BCIS ECC offers a series of programs to help children gradually integrate into school life. The toddler class is designed to help younger children better adapt to group settings and new language environments. In the two weeks before school starts, ECC has designed a "Transition Program" to provide personalized support for toddler and preschool children.

During this period, parents are encouraged to explore the campus with their children, participate in classroom activities, and establish close connections with teachers. By gradually extending the time spent at school, teachers patiently provide children with the time they need to adapt step-by-step to the new environment, avoiding the anxiety that may arise from a sudden change of routine and environment. Jackie emphasizes that building trust and cooperation is essential for a smooth educational experience at ECC. Through this observation and transition program, the kindergarten offers parents a visual perspective, allowing them to see their child's emotional state and how the school subtly supports their growth.

"Parents know their children best, and we encourage them to actively participate and accompany their child during this important transition period," Jackie states. In the toddler classroom, teachers have carefully placed photos of each family around the classroom. "Just as the environment is the third teacher, these photos are the first thing children see when they enter the room. We know that children need comfort, and these photos reflect the care we value at BCIS."

Home-school collaboration is a key principle that BCIS advocates, and the series of activities at the beginning of the new school year aims to lay a solid foundation for future educational cooperation. Recently, ECC hosted a "Family Night," where parents were invited to learn about the school's environment and teaching arrangements and experience their children's learning methods firsthand. In addition, to help new families integrate more quickly, ECC organized a "New Family Breakfast." In a relaxed and pleasant atmosphere, parents enjoyed a morning meal while they listened to the principal and teachers introduce BCIS's high-quality learning and teaching philosophy and methods.

Unlike traditional ‘lectures’, teachers invited new parents to participate in an open-ended cup-stacking game with students, where they interacted and collaborated to build a higher tower of cups. This hands-on activity not only helped children practice measurement and numerical concepts but also allowed them to explore freely, express their thoughts critically and creatively, listen to each other, and learn to collaborate as a team. "What seems like a simple game actually contains challenges, empowerment, inspiration, and care," says Jackie, "This embodies the profound meaning behind our high-quality learning and teaching and the concept of play-based learning."

Beyond the New Family Breakfast, parent participation in community activities, parent committee events, and parent workshops are integral parts of the kindergarten's annual activities. As witnesses and companions in their child's growth, parents are better able to understand how to strategically and actively participate in their child's development as an educational partner of BCIS.
