Celebrating the BCIS Golden Hour

Cecilia PEI

This year’s BCIS Mid-Autumn Festival, known as the ‘BCIS Golden Hour’, was a heartwarming celebration that united our community for an evening filled with warmth, tradition, and connection. Under the luminous full moon, the event honored the spirit of reunion and highlighted BCIS' deep ties to Chinese culture, providing everyone with an opportunity to immerse themselves in the richness of this special holiday.

Families gathered beneath the moonlight, creating a palpable sense of togetherness as the BCISers celebrated the first community-wide event of the year. Students and teachers organized volunteer performances across both ES and SS, while returning alumni also performed to contribute to the joyful atmosphere. The school's outdoor field transformed into an open-air theater, where attendees sat on the grass with their picnic blankets, shared food, and enjoyed the crisp autumn breeze. As dusk gently settled, everyone gathered at the center of the field to admire the full moon. It was not only a time for family reunions but also a moment etched in the memory of the community.

This festival highlighted how at BCIS, we blend our unique Chinese heritage with the international nature of our diverse community, offering a unique stand-out experience for all. No matter their background, everyone had the opportunity to celebrate and appreciate the richness of Chinese traditions. The evening opened with Head of School Tom reciting the classic Chinese poem "Thoughts on a Quiet Night" in Mandarin, followed by teachers performing timeless Chinese pop tunes. These performances bridged cultural and linguistic divides, perfectly symbolizing the blend of China and the world that BCIS creates.

The festival also thoughtfully combined tradition with modernity. A traditional tea pavilion added an elegant touch to the festivities, where friends played Chinese chess, and families created Mid-Autumn lanterns together, embracing time-honored Mid-Autumn customs. Around the festival grounds, banners displaying IB Learner Profile traits such as "Caring," "Inquirers," and "Reflective" blended seamlessly with the virtues of Confucian teachings which are so closely tied to the festival. This harmonious blend of cultures not only shaped the evening’s activities but also reflected the core values the community strives to instill in its learners.
