CLASS OF 2020 UNIVERSITY OFFERS & IB DP UPDATE

At the end of last semester, we shared some of Beijing City International School (BCIS) Grade 12 students' early acceptance university offers (click here to read this article). We are proud to share that 61 graduates have so far received admission offers from nearly 100 of their preferred universities across the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Europe and Asia. Among these are world-renowned institutions, such as the University of Southern California, University College London, New York University, University of Toronto, Hong Kong University, as well as the Chicago Art Institute, Art Center Design School, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. Many students have received multiple offers from several universities, indicating the enthusiasm to have BCIS students join their freshman classes. This is also testament to how BCIS affords and prepares students for the next chapter in their learning journey. IB DP Update
After the worldwide cancellation of IB Diploma Programme (DP) examinations announced on March 27th, the IB has revealed that this year they will be using a new grading system to assess students affected. Instead of examinations and external IB markers only taking samples and applying moderation, the new approach requires schools to submit coursework for all candidates to be externally marked. With regards to the assessment accuracy and fairness issues that may concern students and parents, IB states on its website, "We will use a calculation that is based on the relationship between coursework marks, predicted grades and subject grades to estimate the subject grades candidates would have received if the exams had gone ahead. If the relationship between these elements shows that in previous sessions candidates globally tended to achieve higher outcomes on their exams than their coursework, the calculation used this session will reflect that." BCIS has a strong record of highly accurate grading of IB DP coursework and assessments. Mr. David Nguyen, BCIS IB DP Coordinator, said "I am proud to say that our DP teaching team has been very accurate in their grading and predictions; since the beginning of our school, BCIS teachers have a track record of over 90% accuracy. With this in mind, please rest assured that we are doing everything we can to provide students with the best possible outcome. We will be re-grading all our Internal Assessments to confirm that we are indisputably confident in the grades that we are assigning to students." BCIS Secondary School teachers are working with students and the IB to ensure that the new grading process progresses as planned.
