SUSTAINABILITY AT BCIS

Dennis Wang

Here at BCIS, we actively strive to achieve our School Mission "to challenge and empower students to be compassionate and inspired people, who act for the good of all and for the sustainable development of the world". This year, we are making it our own school challenge to increase our efforts to be more sustainable.

Last year, BCIS did more than ever to promote sustainable and more environmentally-friendly practices on campus. We established the Green Committee who work with our Student Council to begin student-initiated projects on issues such as food waste and plastic use across school. Teachers once again received sustainability-focused training from Inspire Citizens to implement in the classroom. We have linked curriculums with United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and stocked our libraries with books on SDGs for students to expand their knowledge of global efforts on sustainability.

In order to build on these successes, this year we will expand our efforts in these areas by further empowering staff and students to do more. This includes giving students more agency to lead in sustainable initiatives and increasing the awareness of all BCIS students and staff on how we can be more sustainable in our personal practices. In order to reduce the amount of single-use packaging on campus we no longer permit food deliveries to school and, when school events require food deliveries, we will be looking to work with vendors who provide a more proactive approach to environmental sustainability in their use of packaging. We will roll out a greater message of awareness in our communications and look to provide learning opportunities for both staff and students on environmental sustainability.

We hope, that as parents of children who will inherit this world, our BCIS Community can work together "for the good of all and for the sustainable development of the world"! We appreciate parental support as we rise to this challenge!
