Evan is an IB Diploma Programme student whose dedication and focus has enabled him to pursue and reach personal goals, as well as achieve his long-held dream to study architecture at a leading institution.

What year did you begin at BCIS? What is your favorite place on the BCIS campus?

I came to BCIS in the 9th grade. My favorite place in BCIS is the art studio on the fifth floor, I have spent a lot of time there creating art after school. It is a place where I can fully concentrate on creation without any disturbances.

How did you select the universities you applied for? What appealed to you about studying in the UK?

I made it my goal to study architecture at the beginning of the 10th grade, so I selected universities mainly based on their architecture programs. I also had a university trip last summer vacation to learn more about the universities I chose and made sure they are suitable for me. My decision was not only based on what universities could offer but was also deeply affected by my experiences. The reason I chose to study in the UK is that I really enjoy the climate and cultural environment there, especially London, which is a fertile land for pioneering ideas in art and architecture.

What made you want to pursue an architecture course? Have you always been passionate about architecture?

My enthusiasm for architecture has gradually accumulated over time. Growing up in Beijing, I visited many great architectural sites, from traditional Chinese architecture to avant-garde postmodernist works. I really enjoy the experience these buildings bring me, and therefore became interested in this subject. I was exposed to real-life architectural design in my Design & Technology course and in this project, I began to find the charm of architectural design and became determined to study this major in the future.

How did you find the UCAS application process? Is there anything unique about your experience?

Most of my knowledge about the UCAS application process comes from my university counsellor, Mrs Edwards, however, UCAS is not the only way to apply for UK universities. Some universities have their own recruitment channels. For example, UAL (University of the Arts London) has its own office in Beijing, and every year the school's admissions officer comes to Beijing for offline interviews - this is how I got my first offer (which is an unconditional offer). In addition, another school that I applied for, AA (The Architectural Association School of Architecture), is a very unique school. One of the most competitive schools of architecture around the world, AA is independent from the state-funded university system and UCAS application system, nor does it participate in university rankings and has a separate application procedure.

What went through your mind when you received your university offers?

When I received my university offers, I felt that my efforts finally paid off, along with the great expectations for my future. I'm very glad as it is a recognition of my abilities, and it also made me one step closer to my dream.
